Pinewoods of S.Elena

Pinewoods of S.Elena

While not a park in the traditional sense, these gardens represent an open space especially densely planted with pines - hence the name -, criss-crossed by paths and bounded by tree-lined boulevards on the Island of S. Elena, at the very easternmost tip of Venice. The island was not originally planned as it is today, but was small and fairly isolated from the rest of the city. It assumed its current arrangement in the 19th century, pursuant to construction of the bridges that connected it with the historic centre. The marine pine trees protect the island from the lagoon winds. Other species on the island include firs, linden trees, English oak, evergreen oaks, elms, gingkoes, cedars of Lebanon and palms
