Icon Museum
Short description:
In the monumental complex of the historical Campo dei Greci

The first floor of the seat of the Confraternity (Scoletta di San Nicolò, 17th-century work of Baldassare Longhena) gave a home to the Hospital for Indigent Greeks and operated from 1678 until the start of the 20th century. Later, this space was transformed into a Byzantine and post-Byzantine icon museum, the only one of its kind in the world. It was officially opened in 1959 and was radically restructured in 1999. Its historical archives contain codicils, sacred gold embroidered vestments of the bishops of Philadelphia and small objects holding great historic and artistic value. The collection includes donations by members of the Confraternity and other orthodox orders; many icons were brought to Venice by refugees and others were painted by Greek iconographers. Some important works are by Michele Damaskinòs, Giorgio Klonzas, Emanuele Lambardos, Teodoro Pulakis, and Emanuele Tzanes Bunialìs. Alongside these invaluable examples of the Crete school are several works of art from Constantinople of the Paleologhin age, such as the Madonna with Child, the Apostles and Saints, and the icon of Christ "in Gloriam" with the Apostles, brought from Constantinople and bequeathed to the Confraternity by a Byzantine noblewoman, Anna Paleologhina Notarà.
